🎢 From Theme Parks to Helicopter Rides: Why Orlando is My Favorite Florida Getaway

I’m a Florida girl through and through. Born with sunshine in my veins and sandals practically glued to my feet, I’ve had the chance to explore a good chunk of my home state — but there’s one place I always find myself returning to: Orlando.

Yes, I know Orlando is one of Florida’s most visited destinations — and for good reason. Between Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld, there’s no shortage of theme park magic. But the truth is, Orlando is so much more than just roller coasters and mouse ears.

🎡 Orlando = My Weekend Playground

Orlando is my go-to getaway when I need a quick dose of fun, excitement, and something different — all within a few hours’ drive. I’ve been more times than I can count, and I still manage to find something new each trip.

And here's the thing: I’m not a rollercoaster person. Like, not even a little bit. I avoid them like the plague. But somehow… I keep ending up at the parks anyway — and I love it.

👻 Universal Studios: Coasters? No Thanks. Horror Nights? Yes Please.

One of my favorite times to visit Universal is during Halloween Horror Nights. It’s weird, because I’m not big on horror either — jump scares make me jump for real — but there’s something about that eerie fall atmosphere, the haunted houses, the costumes, the energy… I somehow love it. Maybe deep down I do enjoy a little horror in my life, and just don’t want to admit it. (Shrug.)

Even if you're not riding the big coasters, Universal is still full of fun — from interactive shows to themed areas like Diagon Alley and Jurassic Park. There's always something to explore, even if your feet stay firmly on the ground.

🐬 SeaWorld: A Splash of Heaven

Now, SeaWorld? That’s more my vibe. I’m an animal lover and a water baby at heart, so combining the two? It’s like a slice of heaven for me.

Even though I avoid thrill rides, I did get on the Mako roller coaster once — and only because my youngest son, the family’s adrenaline junkie, talked me into it. Let me just say… OMG. I thought I was going to fly off the thing. I was screaming, eyes closed, and gripping the seat for dear life. But hey — we survived, and we actually had a blast.

One of my favorite spots in SeaWorld is Sharks Underwater Grill, a sit-down restaurant where you dine with panoramic views of an actual shark tank. And the best part? You don’t even need park admission to eat there. It's such a unique, calming experience — watching fish glide past your table while you sip a cocktail and enjoy a good meal.

🛍️ More Than Parks: Orlando Off the Beaten Path

Orlando isn’t just about the theme parks — and that’s what keeps me coming back.

  • Disney Springs (formerly Downtown Disney): Free to explore, packed with shops, restaurants, and live entertainment. Perfect for families, date nights, or solo adventures.

  • Universal’s CityWalk: A vibrant hub with bars, shops, live music, and late-night vibes.

  • The Wheel at ICON Park: A giant observation wheel in downtown Orlando that gives you sky-high views of the city. It’s peaceful and surprisingly romantic at sunset.

  • Lake Eola Park: If you’re like me and love water, rent a swan boat and paddle around the lake — it’s such a cute, relaxing experience right in the city.

🚁 Up, Up and Away: Our Favorite Orlando Adventure

One of the coolest things we’ve done in Orlando is take a guided helicopter tour. It’s surprisingly affordable and offers a totally different perspective of the city. You’ll fly over the theme parks, downtown, and even see some of Orlando’s lakes and landmarks from above — plus the guides usually toss in some fun history and hidden gem tips.

🧠 New & Unique: Area15 Comes to Orlando

If you’ve ever been to Area15 in Las Vegas, you’ll be excited to hear that Orlando now has its own version! It’s an immersive, interactive art experience that feels like stepping into a dreamworld — part museum, part game, part escape room. It's visually stunning, endlessly creative, and an absolute blast whether you’re with friends or family.

🚤 Bonus Tip: Explore Beyond the City

If the city scene isn’t your thing, Orlando still has you covered. Take a short drive and you can visit:

  • Kennedy Space Center — for an out-of-this-world experience (pun intended).

  • Everglades tours — hop on an airboat and explore the Florida wilderness. (Just remember: if there’s water, there’s probably an alligator. It’s just a Florida thing.)

🌞 Final Thoughts: Why Orlando Will Always Be a Favorite

Whether I’m braving a haunted house, screaming on a coaster I swore I wouldn’t ride, paddling around a lake, or watching sharks while eating dinner — Orlando always gives me a story to tell.

It’s fun, it’s family-friendly, it’s full of surprises, and it’s never the same trip twice.

So if you're craving a weekend escape filled with adventure, laughs, and a touch of Florida magic — Orlando is waiting.
